Trying to keep a youth group alive and kicking and need to try and squeeze money out of local businesses to help with the funding. Any ideas how I can do this? You lot are awesome!! ;0)
These kids get involved in community clean ups, improve local eyesores (such as electrical stations), local planting/gardening in a 'undesirable' area of town for very little recognition or thanks.

you could put on an event that local business would be interested in.

clearing up or improving an eyesore in the community. is always a good one.
Or if you can bring in people who will spend money with those businesses, a fun day, a talent contest. car washing. etc..

the bottom line is some will see your approach as "begging" unless your group are prepared to show that they intend to give something back.

Don't get me wrong "begging" can work because people do like to help, However, we are becoming desensitised to it.
and for a youth group i think the advantage they have is lots of "creative energy". So you can get them involved at all stages (which will also keep them busy).

I need to send a letter to local politicians as well as the governor and the president asking them to consider sending letters or certificates of recognition for girls who have earned a very high award. I am very good at writing letters but this time I am stumped. I am not sure how to word it. Any help or links would be great.

A letter might contain these elements:

Who you are
What the girls did
What you would like to receive
Your contact info

Being brief is fine, especially if you include some contact information. If you find you still have trouble wording it, a phone call to a public officials office is fine. It could be a nice change of pace for the receptionist who often has to deal with complaining voters. Plus, if you can win over someone on the phone, your chances of getting what you need may improve.
