Is 38 million $ to much to pay a college coach?

Posted by admin | stress coach, | Saturday 11 April 2009 10:04 am

I find it ironic in this time of unemployment, financial stress, and students
having a hard time to meet their tuition obligations, that the U. of Ken-
tucky can justify giving a basketball coach a 38 million$ contract to inst–
ruct something that was once refered to as a student activity.

I not a big fan of Calipari, so him going to Kentucky wasn't exactly exciting for me. He's getting paid about 4 million a year give or take 100,000 grand or so.

Kentucky will make about half of that 38 million back in one season due to ticket sales, merchandise, commercial sponsorship, the top recruits coach Cal will bring in generate money as well and make even more money if they make the NCAA tournament. It actually generates money for the state and promotes jobs and employment.

So while I'm not the biggest Calipari supporter and $38 millions is a lot of dough, it will benefit Kentucky University, the students, the state and the faculty.

And if you knew anything about Kentucky basketball you'd know that it's NEVER been considered a "student activity". They eat, breathe and sleep Kentucky basketball.

It's definitely a crazy amount, however he has the power to turn UK into the #1 program in the country. Look what he did for Memphis and that's a Conference USA team! This is SEC and they'll make big money from this.

Yes it is way too much. Not only are the times bad but Calipari has never won a title and played in a horrible conference.

It is a LOT of money to pay a coach and I am sure that it is a lot more than the people in the administration such as the dean, president of the university, and any positions such as president of the medical or law schools make. Kentucky has exactly what they were demanding when they fired Gillespy, someone who loves to go to smooch and dine with any supporter with deep pockets as part of the job.
The thing is that the agents manage to get the pay based on a percentage of the money that the sport brings in. This is taken from not only gate sales and promotional sales, but also the huge amounts of television money that come in. Even though a lot of the rest of us might be in a bad financial situation, they manage to keep everything based only on their part of the world.
While I hate to see the football and basketball coaches get paid what they do in a way, especially considering that the players do not get anything above board, it is still a kind of supply and demand system. Until the universities and fans step in and put some pressure on them, they are going to take what they can get. Look at the NBA, many of the players basically end up getting paid huge contracts based on nothing more than time in the league. Look at the link that I provided and you will notice that Ben Wallace gets more than LeBron James and Wally Szczerbiak (the Cavs are just one of many examples of this) is right there too based on this system. Why it the NBA not based more on talent and draw?

not at UK, Calipari will have earned every bit of that 38 million if he succeeds in appeasing UK fans, which basically amounts to a final four at least every 2 years and a title at least every 4 years.

the $38 million (over several years) is worth it if he brings championships, which also increase revenues in clothing, alumni donations to ALL parts of the university for almost anything, tickets obviously, and also an improvement in the amount of applications received, which tend to make your school better over the long term.

Sports isn't the be all end all recruiting tool for the avg Joe, but it is cool to attend a school with a great sports program.

Obviously you do not understand the mind frame of the average Kentucky citizen. I am a life long native of Kentucky and the University of Kentucky basketball is all we have. We don't have a pro-football team, baseball team, NBA team or hockey team. The closest thing we have to a pro-sport is a AAA baseball team in Louisville that nobody outside Louisville and Cincinati cares about. The UK football team has gotten better lately but they are nowhere near top SEC form or top 20 nationally. The money they will make off Rupp-Arena ticket sales, alone, will most likely triple Caliparri's annual salary. There is going to be countless of boosters and business jumping on the UK donation bandwagon. UK is a rich school and they have money (probably more than enough) set aside for the basketball program. If they had to, people in the state would sell their homes, autos, valuables and donate to the coaches salary. Coach Cal is a proven winner. Billy G.'s best year was 27-7, Sweet 16. Maybe for Texas A&M that is good but it won't do for UK standards. Coach Cal has been to the Final 4 with two teams and made it to the Championship game and lost. With UK when he makes it to the CChampionshipgame, soon (and he will in the next few years), he won't lose. He is worth EVERY PENNY.
